How can i tell if my dog is lame ?

  • Your dog may become slow on walk

  • Difficulty in walking on and down to stairs

  • Unable to bear weight on affected limb

  •  Dog may skip that affected leg or limping during walking

  • Pain during walking

  • Hold his leg up while standing

  • Unable to jump on couch

What are the common reason of lameness in dogs?

1. Long nail

  • Long nail is one of the reason of lameness in dog due to long nail dog can not place a proper weight on limb so ligament and muscle of that limb are abnormally stretched , Long nails are more likely to break that will be very painful situation so it is important to examine your dogs nail and trim it regularly to prevent dog to limp or pain.

2. Obesity/ overweight

  • Dogs with overweight or obese have a more chances to lame , due to obesity more weights come on joints and limbs so overweighed dogs can’t run properly or can’t jump easily, he have to give some extra efforts to do work. So avoid dog to overfeeding, help to loose weight and keep him in appropriate body weight range.

3. Injury to paw

  • Check for any injury in paw because dogs are wander everywhere in house , garden or bushes sometime any sharp object like needle , throne etc. pierce in paws and make painful condition so dogs refuse to place that limb on floor and showing signs of lameness.

4. Congenital

  • Some dogs are congenitally affected to condition like hip dysplasia . In this situation dog can’t walk properly, unable to jump. In such condition dogs should have to be on life long medication.

5. Slippery floor

  • Most of us keep dog inside house on tiled or timber floor, yes that will be easy to clean for you but this type of floor is not good for dogs. In house dog jump off the couch rush toward something and run everywhere. On the slippery floor when dog jumps or run fast due to improper grip between paw and floor that legs are stretched away from body so overstretching of ligament tendon and muscle and alignment of body is disturbed.
  • For preventing this put a non slippery mat around the placed where dogs want to jump off (like around couch , bed , and furniture ) and avoid running or playing on slippery floor.

6. Young and old age

  • The bones and joints in puppies and young dogs don’t properly form until they are passed puberty, so too much exercise can adversely affect their bone growth so with abnormal bone growth dog can’t move normally in proper gait. (Avoid over exercising to dogs in younger age)
  • In older age dogs have a deficiency of calcium and phosphorus so bones are easily wear and setting up arthritis in joints of such as knee , elbow and hip joints. So in old aged dog avoid exercising and provide calcium and phosphorus rich supplements.
  •  If you notice signs of lameness in dogs consult your vet near by. Vet may do examination to your dog , diagnose and give a proper medication according to your dog’s body condition.

  • Generally medication includes anti inflammatory drugs ,pain killer and calcium supplements. (note: Do not try to give medicine at home on your own it may be harmful to your dog please consult your vet before)
