
- Cypermathrin is synthetic pyrethroids which is used as insecticide and usually present in antiflea spot on preparation , shampoo and soap of dogs.
Why only cats ?
- Cypermathrin is toxic to cat but not to dogs because inside the dog’s body cyperpermathrin is breakdown into harm less substance under such enzymes (glucuronidase) and this harmless substances are excreted via urine but in cats due to lack of this enzyme cypermathrin accumulate in cat’s body which is very toxic to cat.

How cats are exposed to cypermathine ?
- Cats are poisoned by their owner they apply spot on preparation, shampoo and soap contained cypermathrin on cat which is actualy made for dogs, owner thinks that product made for dog is safe to cat also but is not.
- Usually topically applied Cypermathrin not much absorbed through skin but by licking or grooming it goes inside body, Cat ingest insecticide contained cypermethrin.
- Other way is cats come in contact with dog which is recently treated with spot on preparation.
What are the symptoms ?
- Cat which is poisoned by cyperpermathrin show a signs like tremor, shaking of head, drooling, twitching of limb muscle, exaggerated response to stimuli, vomiting, diarrhoea, difficulty in breathing, sometimes fits and convulsions and cypermathrin toxicity can leads to death also if treated not early.
What to do ?
- If you notice such symptoms in your cat consult veterinarian as early as possible. There is a no specific antidote available. Your vet wash the local area, and give symptomatic medicines to control fits and convulsion and other treatment given according to your cat’s condition.
How to prevent ?
- You can prevent occurrence of cypermathrin toxicity by choosing a right product which is made for cat only, read the description and warning before using any product, use permathrin free product to cats.
