
Prepare a nest box for puppies
- For that take a cardboard box and put a towel on floor inside and wash the towel on regular basis. some time this little puppies rolled inside the blanket and die due to unable to take a breath so put a newspaper on blanket to prevent puppy roll inside the towel.
- You should also provide a heat pad for Little puppies it is really important that puppy stay warm so for that you can put a heat pad under the blanket and keeping them warm all the time.
- If puppies were being cared by their mother she choose a place that is soft, warm and away from full sunlight so in absence of their mother you should provide a this type of environment.
Feeding of puppies
- It is very important for puppies to drink milk from their mom however sometime that’s not always an option either because mom doesn’t have a milk or the mother has died.
- Puppies need to be fed about every 3 or 4 hours. Divide a full day meal in six to eight meal and provide them at appropriate time.
What to feed?
- Puppies need to be fed canine milk replacer not a cow’s milk which we eat because cow’s milk can cause gastrointestinal disturbance leads to diarrhoea.
- Commercial milk replacer are available in the market buy it and prepare it as direction on the label (most of the time 1 part is milk replacer and 2 part is fresh water). Prepare a full day volume of milk replacer at one time and keep in refrigerator. At a time of feeding take it out and make warm on pan then filled in bottle and fed to puppy. Prepared formula is discarded after 24 hours it can not be use after that.
How to feed?
- Get a feeding bottle with a nipple on pet store. Make a appropriate size of hole by hot needle. Hole should be small as so if you turn bottle upside down milk come out as a drop by drop.
- Position the puppy on stomach with his head level. Open the puppy’s mouth with one finger and place a nipple inside the mouth on tongue.
- After feeding rub the puppy on his back, pat his back so that he can burp.
- If puppy refuse to eat by bottle method tube feeding is required.
How much amount feed to puppy ?
- Commercial milk replacers are labelled to help you calculate the total volume to be fed per day.
- Small breed puppy should be 10-15 ml per feeding during the first week of their life.
- Not too overfed puppies it will cause vomiting, diarrhoea and bloating.
Help puppies to Poop/Pee
- Puppies can’t poop or pee on their own upto 2 weeks. Their mother stimulating them to poop/pee. In the absence of her you have to be help them to pee/ poop, for that soak a cotton ball and rub gently on genital area will stimulate puppies to poop/pee.
Weaning time
- Puppy milk replacer should be the main source of nutrition until 3-4 weeks of age after that transition the puppies on a gruel, making a gruel by good quality solid food mix it in prepared milk replacer and allow solid food to become a soft and then offer to puppy.
